The Past: A Nostalgic Journey to Singapore's Simple Life

Rediscovering the Charm of Olden Days

Inspired by the simplicity and charm of Singapore's past, designer Andy Tan takes us on a nostalgic journey with "The Past" - a residential house that captures the essence of a bygone era.

As modernization continues to reshape our cities, it's easy to forget the beauty of a simpler time. "The Past" is a design project that aims to recreate the nostalgic feeling of old Singapore, reminding us of the humble and authentic lifestyle that once prevailed.

What sets "The Past" apart is its unique incorporation of elements that were common in the past but have now become rare. The design pays homage to the middle to low-income families who designed their own homes using affordable and easily available materials.

Cement screed, a popular flooring choice in the past, is used extensively throughout the house, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The walls are adorned with real decorative bricks and old rice sacks that have been repurposed as floor mats. The living room features an island table made entirely of mosaic tiles, while the kitchen cabinet doors are made of wire mesh. A chalkboard wall adds a touch of old-school charm, inviting residents to unleash their creativity. Wooden furnishings complete the vintage aesthetic.

With a floor area of 1,500 square feet, "The Past" is a fully-furnished house that seamlessly blends the old with the new. It is a testament to the designer's attention to detail and commitment to preserving the essence of Singapore's past.

Andy Tan's design journey for "The Past" began with extensive research in older districts of Singapore, where he studied the building materials and design elements used in the 1960s. He also scoured vintage furniture shops to find the perfect pieces that would complement the concept.

Creating a design that captures the essence of the past while meeting modern practicality was not without its challenges. The team had to improvise certain materials and items to ensure easy maintenance and functionality. Careful selection of accessories was crucial to maintain the authenticity of the design without appearing overly modernized.

"The Past" project commenced in July 2013 and was completed in just two months. Located in Singapore, it serves as a reminder of the city's rich history and cultural heritage.

Recognized for its outstanding creativity and innovation, "The Past" was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2014. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, technical prowess, and artistic skill, leaving a lasting impression on viewers.

Step into "The Past" and experience the nostalgia of a bygone era. Let this design transport you to a simpler time, where the beauty of simplicity reigns supreme.
